Stephen Colbert has been a late night personality for the last 10 years on his Emmy Award winning Comedy Central show The Colbert Report.  David Letterman has been hosting CBS’s The Late Show for 21 seasons, and recently announced his intention to retire at the end of 2014.

This morning CBS announced that Colbert would be taking over for Letterman some time in 2015, a move which is both shrewd and headstraching at the same time.  Lately, Colbert has had some trouble with a hashtag campaign to get him removed/canceled for one of his jokes pertaining to folks of an Asian ethnicity.  The joke seemed rather tame compared to some of his more bawdy punchlines, but the response was immediate with #CancelColbert trending for two days.

Bringing Stephen to CBS is a smart move from the point of view that NOW they’ll have one of the best lineups on network.  The Late Show followed by The Late Late Show.  I never miss Craig Ferguson.  And really, I feel he’s the best right now on late night.

Hmmm.  I wonder if John Stewart will be Colbert’s first guest.
