– Bragging rights(Featured work/collaborations): 3 ‘The Gathering’ anthology stories written by Gail Simone, Sterling Gates and Corrina Lawson. Womanthology: ‘Heroic’ anthology from IDW, and a 42-page back-up story in Alex De Campi’s ‘Valentine’ graphic novel published by Image. – Also many official sketch card sets over the years featuring such properties as HACK/SLASH and Lady Death.

Artist continued profile. Let’s get a tiny bit personal:

– What are your goals as an artist?: The ultimate goal of my career is to simply make good comics. I’d love to one day get into my own creator-owned stuff, specifically making comics for everyone. I want to write about women, and people of different ethnicities, and people of different sexual orientations. – But my current short-term goal is to build up my fanbase a little more and get a steady gig at a bigger publisher.

– Has reading a Comic ever changed your life? Which one/why?: Not really any one comic I can think of, but I did love Bryan Q. Miller’s Stephanie Brown ‘Batgirl’ series from DC. I’d buy every issue thinking ‘wow, I want to draw this comic!’ Sadly that goal is no longer attainable, but it was a dream I had for awhile that fuelled my efforts to improve my own work.

.

– Favourite artist/why?: I am so obsessed with comics and other comic artists that I could easily make a list of my top 100 favourite comic artists, it’s hard for me to pick a favourite. If I were to pick a favourite though, it would have to be Nicola Scott. Not only because she’s an amazing artist who draws different people in her work (not just people with the same face and different hair) but because she’s a local Aussie girl. She was a big inspiration to me when I first decided to pursue a career drawing comics, as you can imagine there aren’t many opportunities here (especially where I live) for a woman who wants to draw comics. But Nicola met her goal of drawing Wonder Woman for DC, and if she can do it, then so can I.

– If someone created a Comic about your life what would they title it?:
‘Draw, Eat, Sleep.’ I think that people think the lives of comic artists are a lot more glamorous than they actually are. Most of my day-to-day activities involve waking up, checking my email, drawing, maybe taking a snack break, squeezing in some house work, cooking dinner, drawing some more, then sleeping.

– If you could have any power from a Comic character, what would it be/why?: If I were going to have just one I think I’d like to be an all-round bad ass like Wonder Woman. She can fly, has super strength, endurance, speed and can easily drink Steve Trevor under the table.

– What is better: The BatCave or the Fortress of Solitude?:  The BatCave! The Fortress of Solitude is empty, and cold. At least the BatCave will be fully set-up with X-Boxes and Playstations and stuff.

– What is your guilty pleasure food?: Banana Splits.

– What do you think of Comics being made into movies?: I think it’s a great idea. Comics have become a lot less mainstream these days and the comics industry as a whole is really just holding onto the people who grew up reading comics. By having comics made into movies hopefully we can move into the mainstream a little more and get back some of those lapsed readers. To do that though I think the comic companies themselves need to market for such a thing, and look at their price points. – When it’s the same price to see a movie or buy a comic, what do you think the average person is going to do.

– What do you prefer to snack on when creating a masterpiece?: I mostly drink a lot of tea, my favourite is green tea and mint.

– Where do you ‘draw’ your daily inspiration from?(See what I did there hehe): Hrmmm, this is a hard one. From everything I guess, other comics, books, things that I see around me. As someone constantly trying to improve their work I try and may special attention to the ‘form’ of things so I can re-create them in my own work later.

.
– Who’s the raddest person you have met?: Tie between Gail Simone and Neil Gaiman. Both are very inspiring, lovely, awesome writers who I’d wrest other artists to draw for.

– Likes: My husband and our cat, tea, fashion, comics, Dungeons and Dragons and other awesome games.

– Dislikes: Sexism. Exclusion of: women, people of colour, LGBT, and other minorities from mainstream comics. Micky Mouse.

– Any thank you’s/shoutouts?:  Just a quick shout-out to Nessa from Aggressive Comix for this interview, and approaching me at Armageddon Expo about it. It was lovely meeting you and I will always happily support women interested in comics. I have so much love for such passionate people and the crew at Aggressive certainly seem like very passionate ladies.

So happy to be doing my first Female Artist profile on such a strong and amazing woman. I was a teeny bit intimidated walking up to her table, but we will only let the entire AC fanbase know this 😉 – Ness 🙂
