America is the newest series debuting from Overground Comics this May and we have the FIRST eight page from the comic. No other site currently has it but we do! The main characters America made her debut last month in one of their other titles, Graduate #3.

The comic was created by Jon Hughes and illustrated by Jason Pearson’s. If you do not know who Jason Pearson is well he is the artist behind the 2010 Deadpool comic.

We have read other creations from Overground Comics and I must say that the story is strong on their other titles as well. We not only got the first eight pages which you can read below but we also have a chance to sit and talk with creator Jon Hughes.

Aggressive Comix: So readers are already familiar with this character?
Jon Hughes: Yes, anyone who has been reading Graduate, anyway. America was introduced in the book as sort of a role model for Natalie, but we had bigger plans for her from the beginning.

Aggressive Comix: Who is the creative team for the book?
Jon Hughes: We are very excited to have Jason Pearson working on the book right now. Jason is handling the penciling and inking for the book, and I’m writing and coloring it.

Aggressive Comix: For readers who don’t know, tell us about Jason Pearson.
Jon Hughes: Jason Pearson is a superstar. He’s worked on major projects for both Marvel and DC, and still does covers occasionally for them. He might be best known for drawing the book that the recent Deadpool movie was based on. He also produces a creator owned property called Body Bags.

Aggressive Comix: Why did you choose Jason Pearson to draw this book?
Jon Hughes: America is a special book for us. It shows some grit that you don’t necessarily see in some of our other titles, and we wanted an artist that could really capture the mood of the story.

Aggressive Comix: And what is the mood of the story?
Jon Hughes: America is introduced as a character who was at one time invincible, and now has to accept the fact that she is once again vulnerable to harm. Rather than shying away from the risks of fighting crime, she dives even more recklessly into it, finding a thrill in the danger that she’s never had to face before. It’s a transitional story that is a bit of a commentary on addiction as well.

Aggressive Comix: Is this an ongoing series?
Jon Hughes: All of our titles are limited series, so this one is as well. Currently it’s scheduled for four issues, and we hope to do more with the character after the conclusion of the premiere series.

Aggressive Comix: It looks like all of your lead characters are female. Is that a coincidence, or is it by design?
Jon Hughes: It’s by design. We have male leads in our team books, but yes, all of our primary stand-alone leads are women. It’s just such an underserved market, still, and we want to be a part of changing that. When I come up with a concept for a new story or character, if the gender of the character isn’t important to the concept, I design the character as a woman. There still aren’t enough prominent female characters, so we work towards helping to change that.

Aggressive Comix: Are you trying to create positive role models for women?
Jon Hughes: Not necessarily. We do have some characters that experience growth, which is good, but mostly I want to create compelling characters that people can relate to. When someone reads a story that I’ve written, when they’re finished I want them to feel like someone knows what it feels like to be them. That’s important to me.

Aggressive Comix: And you feel like people can relate to America?
Jon Hughes: I hope so.

Aggressive Comix: When does the book come out?
Jon Hughes: The book is scheduled to premiere in shops May 25th.

Aggressive Comix: Great we’re looking forward to it. Thank you for taking the time to tell us more about it.
Jon Hughes: My pleasure. Thank you for the opportunity.
