Sofia Coppola is negotiating to direct The Little Mermaid, a live-action version of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale for Universal Pictures.  Caroline Thompson of Edward Scissorhands fame is rewriting the script, about the mermaid willing to make a Faustian bargain to live on land after she falls in love. Previous drafts were done by Fifty Shades Of Grey scribe Kelly Marcel and Shame scribe Abi Morgan, and Joe Wright was at one time eyeing this to direct.

You might recall the internet crazyness that linked Emma Watson and even Daniel Radcliff to this film.  It was an April Fool’s Day prank that continues to make the rounds a year later.  Emma is slated to appear in the new live action Cinderella, or was it Beauty and The Beast?  No one seems to be able to agree which it is.   Zoidberg says “Why not both?”

Anyhow, Sofia Coppola is an Oscar winning writer, and nominated director for Lost In Translation.  Her take would be interesting to see, and hopefully more news about this will be out soon.
