This was the sixth year of the Her Universe Fashion Show at San Diego Comic Con [SDCC], a competitive fashion show that celebrates couture fashion for geeks and nerds.
This year 24 designers, some new, some returning, took to the runway to show their interpretations of geek high fashion.
Each design was its own unique voice, fully embracing the theme The Power of Fashion, and demonstrating the skill and vision of its designer.
While there could only be two winners, one picked by the judges and one picked by the audience, most designers were quick to say that they felt being chosen to construct and show their design on the runway was something of a win in of itself.
This year’s judges were; Ed Labay, VP GMM at Hot Topic, Liz Munoz CEO of Torrid, Merit Leighton voice of Frosta on Dreamworks’ She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Michaela Dietz voice of Amethyst on Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe, Lisa Baldzicki VP of Parks Merchandise & Product Development at Disney Parks, Meghan Camerena of @strawburry17. Returning to the runway to help judge this year’s show were also the three winners from last year, Cynthia Kirkland, Jane Burson, and Kristi Siedow Thompson.
Winning Judge’s Choice was Adria Renee with her Jurassic Park inspired look, “Destination: Isla Nubar”.
Winning Audience Choice was Sarah Hambly with her Cardi B meets Loki design “Bodak Green”.
Both winners will go on to work with Her Universe to design a line for Hot Topic inspired by Wonder Woman.
Competition was fierce, and every year we marvel at how the judges can even choose a winner. Who is your favorite?
Congratulations to all the finalists, you can see all their designs in the the gallery below.
