While I’m still waiting for my west coast airtime of the long running show The View, the buzz all over the internet is the big “official” Marvel announcement on today’s episode is a new direction for the God of Thunder.  And she’ll be a woman.

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

This isn’t the first time a woman has held Mjölnir, remember when Storm was the Goddess of Thunder?

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.

EDITORS NOTE: After this piece got posted and everyone else was jumping on the “Thor is a lady” bandwagon, or setting it on fire as the case may be, The Avengers director and all around proponent for strong women characters in film/tv posted this awesome tidbit:

And while it is WAY TOO EARLY to start talking about a film adaptation, we think, I’m gonna toss in my three fancasting choices.  Katheryn Winnick, who plays Shield-Maiden and Earl Lagertha on History’s Vikings,  Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica and currently Longmire, and Gwendoline Christie of Game Of Thrones and Star Wars VII.

  1. Wow, that’s crazy and interesting all at the same time. So Odin really had a daughter? Have to read into that.

Love your cosplay as well as Bill Watters’ photos; saw you guys at Big Wow. Keep shooting. 🙂

    1. Maybe next time you could actually CREDIT ME in your photo instead of someone else before giving the image to Comics Alliance? Because that wasn’t annoying *sarcasm*

  2. Can we please stop changing male superheroes into female ones? I know they do this in order to appeal to women, but why do they have to take away from male heroes. Don’t detract from one group of fans in order to appease another. Thats what gets so many franchises into trouble.
Not to mention that I think it is actually detrimental to them trying to create female heroes. Instead of coming up with legitimate ‘stand on their own’ heroines, they basically are making women ride the coattails of the legacy the male heroes built. This is just lazy. Marvel is basically saying “We don’t want to go through the hassle of making a new female heroine, having to introduce her from scratch and have to market her in order to make her popular…..changing Thor will just be easier and cheaper and still give us female cred.”

There are so many awesome ways that they could have gone with this, and they chose the lamest way.

    1. Honestly, I fully agree with Conrad Cody Cline. I can’t STAND that they could even FATHOM having this done!! BE ORIGINAL! Create a NEW heroine rather than taking away from the already pre-existing MALE Heroes! This is a travesty and, I’m sorry, if this happens my respect for Marvel will definitely go down. LEAVE THOR ALONE!

    2. Considering in Norse mythology Loki became a female horse (and bore the 8 legged horse-child… thing) it’s not too strange to think a female Thor could fit right in.

      1. Well its not that a female thor could not fit right in, there are many things in mythology, norse and otherwise, that are female. However, Marvel is not mythology. Marvel is a company plagiarizing mythology for financial profit. Same things disney does with shows like cinderelle and snow white, since they didnt write the story they just drew it out.

Now, in the end, there is nothing wrong with what they do, retelling the story and making money off of it. Most orators and story tellers have been such for the benefit it gives to their self worth in a number of ways.

The issue I have is that Thor is built, inside of the Marvel world, and outside of norse mythology, as a male character. They are changing him to female not out of following mythology, but simply as a mechanism to seem more female friendly.

It is an injustice not only to the myth to be perverted in such a way, but also to the female audience.

Essentially, females are getting a hand me down hero. It would be like them taking Wonder Woman and making Wonder Man who basically just took over the gauntlets and the lasso.

I am all for female characters. i wish they would make more of them. Just make them in the right way, not in the cheapass way of reskinning. Don’t make “Iron Woman” or anything of the sort.

Look at She-Hulk. She may have had many different branch offs in the comic world, but for most people she is just a copy of Hulk and nothing more than a novelty, no matter what they develop out about her character.

She-Thor is going to be the same. Sure its not “She-Thor”,…its supposed to actually be Thor in female form, but people are already referring to it as a “She-Thor” kind of character and not as Marvel keeps insisting she is. So in a year or two all we wil have is a male thor back and a she thor that is a failed footnote in the comic history books and may make random appearances or be an answer in some random trivia, just like the other female thor was.

Instead, come out with a badass female superheroine. Make he part of the thor world if you want. Give her a badass weapon of her own. There are many famel heros of mythology they can pick from.

Just off the top of my head, do a Shield Maiden. Like Freya http://marvel.wikia.com/Freya_(Earth-616)

I like the character of Freya in actually mythology and would love to see her turned into a mainstream badass Heroine.

..but instead of giving a proper female character, that can further enrichen theMarvel universe, they simply change the gender of one character and try to make it seem like they are not doing it for all the wrong reasons.
