We love Sir Ian McKellen, whether he’s mastering magnets in The X-Men or paling around with best bud Sir Patrick Stewart.  He’ll forever be Gandalf the White/Grey to some audiences, and that’s pretty awesome too.

But here we have a sneak peek at McKellen’s next project, where he’ll be playing the greatest detective in literary history!  (No, not you Batman, sorry.)

Directed by Bill Condon (The Fifth Estate), the film is based on a 2005 book called A “Slight Trick of the Mind” by Mitch Cullin, which focuses on the 93-year-old detective, whose mental prowess has dulled a bit. Holmes has retired to a seaside locale with his maid and her son, played by Laura Linney and Milo Parker.

Mr. Holmes is set to open sometime in 2015, we’ll keep you updated.
