A long time ago, in what feels sort of like a galaxy far, far away, there was mention of a live-action Star Wars television series chronologically set between the two groundbreaking film trilogies. Erupting into heavy rumors ranging from a Boba Fett protagonist to cast cameos, steady streams of relatively vague to questionably reliable information have churned the rumor mill ever since. Making it as far as a supposed fifty hours of written episodes, the series became firmly imbedded in a carbonite prison indefinitely until budgetary and technological restraints could be compromised. Yet in the wake of what strikes some as a post-midlife crisis, George Lucas selling all rights to Disney before his recent engagement, it seems Star Wars: Underworld may be crawling back out into the light. ABC recently had this to say:
“We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm,”ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee told the outlet. ”We’re not sure what yet… We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.”
Intricately bridging the gap between the original and prequel trilogy, not much is particularly known of Star Wars: Underworld save a general synopsis. Bleeding Cool provided this:
“Sources say the live-action series centers on the story of rival families struggling over the control of the seedy underside of the Star Wars universe and the people who live within the subterranean level and air shafts of the metropolis planet Coruscant (the Empire’s urban-sprawl-covered home planet). A bounty hunter may be the main character. The time period allows for all sorts of potential appearances from classic figures from the Star Wars universe.”
Set within the corrosive innards of Coruscant during the rise of the Empire, it’s sounding akin to even downright identical to the plot for the 1313 Star Wars video game project. Could this be a return to the gritty Empire Strikes Back maturity of yore? Sopranos meets Skywalker? It’s very likely that the teetering success or failure of ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. will determine Underworld’s fate with the television network, but one thing remains fact: we’re going to the lower levels of the galactic capital. It’s only a matter of time.
