With the current success of Marvel Studios, the steady stream of superhero genre films can be a tad bit overwhelming to newcomers. Fortunately Sam Jackson had enough of those *insert expletive* Marvel superheroes in those *insert expletive* solo movies. Nick Fury, the infamous narrow-visioned director of S.H.I.E.L.D., was the proverbial concrete that bonded them all into one shared sandbox of universal playtime. Now set to surely enable more introductions for second tier superheroes, Joss Wheden has officially (link) been green-lit to write and potentially direct an ABC shipped series based upon the long-winded special ops acronym. Nick Fury first appeared in 1963’s Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1, a relatively charming but archaically patriotic war title not closely tied to capes and spandex. He later came to make brief cameo stints in Strange Tales until graduating to become predominately known for Marvel’s answer to Red Scare spy antics in his self-titled Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. comic. In it he regularly combated Bond-veined terrorist organizations like that of Hydra and A.I.M. alongside an expanded universe of brightly-colored vigilante allies. Years later, Ultimate Marvel Team-Up and most especially Ultimate Spider-Man inducted the arguably more ironic variation. The cycloptic agency director was intentionally reinvented to bare a striking resemblance to the man who would eventually, not coincidentally, come to portray the much later film version of this now more dominant Marvel overseer interpretation. Who the cast will include, if any cinematic celebrities at all, is still spy-work and speculative theory at best. Outside of Whedon’s brother collaborating on the project, unfortunately no other information has hit the surface. Needless to say, despite the unanswered questions of whether or not the small screen helicarrier will bare some familiar faces…EXCELSIOR! I think I speak for the community at large while fiendishly stroking my mjolnir replica; this had best outlast a single season. Nuff said!
