Taffeta Darling here with your weekly session of the Aggressive Comix Artist Spotlight. Last week (sadly) I failed to provide you with a new awesome artist because I was road tripping home from C2E2.  Forgive me? Okay cool, because this week I’m making it up to you with the stylings of Mike Moffatt. I met Mike by chance after purchasing a vinyl toy he had customized to look like Steve Zissou. Myself being a fan of all things Wes Anderson and especially Bill Fucking Murray I became a fan of Mike’s and feel like yall might dig him too. Check out our quick Q&A below.  scanner darkly

TD: Please tell our Aggressors about yourself and the art you do.

MM: Well I am probably not the only one who has a love of films, comics, or video games. But I keep returning to my past I guess through my art, getting to chance to share with others who care deeply about their childhood. I tend to paint movies that I find myself in, that genuine moment that true fans never forget. Like the scene at the end of Life Aquatic with their all in the sub and they finally see the Jaguar Shark. This is the entire movie in 30sec for me and I get emotional still after 100 plus views

20151208_193539TD: When creating a new piece what are your favorite mediums and themes to work with?

MM: My favorite medium has been acrylic for years but I’m slowly moving into watercolors. And after the wonderful people like Cody and Shelby at VinylThoughts, I’m now very addicted to custom vinyl toys. Which I’m happy to say is my main focus now with my artwork. They along with other custom toy designers like Jason Chalker, James Garrett and Toby Grauberger have been so helpful and such a happy change from the super competitive painting world.

20150911_165214TD: I became a fan of your work through Vinyl Thoughts and your Steve Zissou custom toy. After checking out more of your work I found that you do a lot of Wes  Anderson fan art, what is it about his films that inspire you to create?

MM: I would say it’s how Wes Anderson frames each scene very much like a classical painting. He places as much detail in the scene, lining up characters almost like bowling pins. His use of the  musical score and slow motion has become his signature style. The colors, set design and costumes all make him the John Hughes of our generation. And last but not least his love of Bill Murray has made him forever loved because he proves love and humor rule the world.

20160309_084247TD: When getting to know artists I always ask what a dream project or collaboration would be for them to work on… what is yours?

MM:  My dream would be to work with Stanley Donwood, the artist behind Radiohead. From funny saftey sign doodles on Ok Computer to the Japanese wood carving of the Eraser from Thom York, he always pushes to create his new style. To me, a real artist would continue to create throughout their life, never settling for success. Always open to suggestions, collaborations, and viewing art as simply life.
