In case you’ve forgotten- Disney is still planning on doing a live-action adaptation of one of their other classic animated princess tales, “The Little Mermaid“.
According to an exclusive report from Variety, Melissa McCarthy is being courted by the Rob Marshall-directed production to play the one and only sea witch, Ursula.

Lady Gaga had been rumored to be in the running for the role previously, but the choice of McCarthy is an interesting one.
In the animated Disney take of the classic Hans Christen Anderson tale of the aquatic fairy tale featured Pat Carol as the half-woman-half octopus magic user, alongside Jody Benson as Ariel, the little mermaid.
Rumors have also swirled that Zendaya was the top pick for the lead, but so far nothing else has been known casting-wise.
There are a few things we know for sure, namely that original animated Little Mermaid score composer Alan Menken is on board, as well as Lin-Manuel Miranda. Just last month, Tim Burk (Fantastic Beasts) was added as visual effects supervisor, according to HNEntertainment.
Menken recently tweeted a photo of he and Lin-Manuel, with the caption “And we’re off and swimming!”, to which Miranda responded with a dark-skinned mermaid emoji, possibly confirming Zendaya? (Obviously also very far from a confirmation, but nice to see the two men gettin’ to work!)
There is at present no expected release date for the film, but this year’s D23 (August 20th-25th 2019) may hold some information about the upcoming slate of Disney titles getting reimagined. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
