transcendence_041614_1600Wish I could go against the grain in my review for this film that currently holds an 18% tomatometer, but unfortunately the film deserves it.
The film is about a dying scientist who uploads his consciousness to a computer, and becomes too powerful as he transfers himself online, and yearns for more knowledge/power, becoming too godlike. Pretty much feels like a darker take to the movie ‘Her’, but nowhere near as good.
Main problem with this film is it drags. It’s much longer than it should be. You could’ve made a 10 minute short of this movie, and it would’ve hit all the marks this film delivered with just as much impact. To be honest, if you saw the trailer, you saw the movie (minus knowing exactly how it ends). I was connected to the characters as much as I was connected to the characters while watching the trailer. I didn’t really give a shit if any of the characters where gonna die or not in the final act.
I love johnny Depp, but his presence still wasn’t enough to save this film. He plays the normal/boring “secret window” Jonny Depp. I feel like he has three acting go-to’s: Variations of Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, & Dry Depp. Not dissing him though, that’s more than many actors, nor do I think he’s incapable of more. My point is the only interest I had in his character is just the fact that he’s played by Johnny Depp. That’s it.
I wish I could “transcend” myself out of that theater. I’m only joking, it wasn’t that bad, I still managed to be entertained, even if at times my mind would drift in and out of it. The concept is thought provoking but unfortunately I already thought about most of those “what ifs” after watching ‘Her’.
A year from now if you mention ‘Transcendence’ to me, I probably wont be sure what movie your talking about. Once you give me a little more info to remind me, i’ll probably only remember the trailer moments of the film. Basically it’s a forgettable film that feels like it would fit better in the late 90’s early 2000’s. It’s a rental at best.

I give Transcendence a 6.5 out of 10

(Score based on school grading in which 10-5 mean A-F, and 5-0 lets you know how badly it failed, just to rub it in)

Here you go, enjoy the movie.
