Mourning the loss of the unexpectedly popular The Avengers supporting role, Clark Gregg’s Captain Americana-loving S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson has spawned revitalizing murmurs since his untimely death at the hands of Loki. Some have outlandishly speculated (more like fantasized) on him being adapted into a re-imagining of the intangible android, the Vision. Others have accepted his demise. Fortunately, we have a compromise. Putting the rumor mill to rest, Joss Whedon himself had this to say at the yesterdays NYCC Marvel television panel:
“We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that. From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. … The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I’m really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don’t stretch the bounds of reality.” However, take no fear. Marvel producer Kevin Feige closed that with, “There was never going to be a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show without Agent Phil Coulson!” “He’s headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was.”
While it’s still unclear as to whether this will be a prequel or the brick and mortar of our beloved superhero team really is being (quite literally) revived for ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D., this is sure to stir up fan enthusiasm.
