Really is a bit too fat

Godzilla had a great start. The intro had a very compelling scene with Bryan Cranston, and you really connect to him. Unfortunately after that the film skips 15 years later, and the movie now centers on his son who grew up to be kick-ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a much less interesting character. The marketing for this film was very misleading, as i thought Cranston would be the main character (besides Godzilla ofcourse), but unfortunately his son is, and at some point Cranston’s character becomes irrelevant to the film. At that point I held off my disappointment hoping what comes next with Godzilla will more than make up for what’s looking to be very bland human characters. Not the case.
The film rarely shows Godzilla in action, and when it does I barely give a shit. Way into the movie (nearing the end) Godzilla finally does his energy blast out of his mouth, but it comes out of nowhere, and reminding me of the scene in Iron-man 3 where the villain randomly breathes fire.
Godzilla-2014-Movie-Review-Image-2The Scientist throughout the film that’s been studying Godzilla and tries to ground Godzilla in reality with bullshit science looks completely stoned throughout the film with dialogue to match. I never really understand Godzilla’s motivation in the film, since he doesn’t even eat the monsters he set out to fight.
The only other good thing about this film are the performances from most of the cast, unfortunately Cranston is underused, I didn’t give a shit about Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character, and whenever they’d cut away to his wife played by Elizabeth Olsen, it’s just to watch her cower and not really contribute anything to the film.
518213739-New-Godzilla-Called-Too-Fat-by-Japanese-FansAnother thing about the marketing is some shots with Godzilla appear different in the trailers. Like there’s the exact same shot, but Godzilla is rendered doing something completely different. I’m not sure if it’s to make it look cooler for the trailer, or so that they don’t give away the monster Godzilla fights, even though they spoiled that with the final trailer of the film (?)
Anyways, this film was very disappointing, I was struggling to keep my eyes open near the end, and i’ll go as far as saying i’d much rather watch the 1998 American Godzilla film than watch this movie again. No exaggeration. I’m baffled by why audiences seem to like this film.

I give Godzilla a 6 out of 10
