Hasbro has shocked the toy world yet again. After the surprise announcement that they had outright purchased Power Rangers from Saban in 2018, they have now acquired the master toy license for Ghostbusters. Of course, Hasbro bought Kenner in 1991, and they first produced Real Ghostbusters toys from 1986-1991. The first products under the new deal will include product for next year’s new film, being directed by Jason Reitman.

“As we build up to release our new Ghostbusters film next year, it was a natural choice to work with Hasbro to develop an all-new line of toys that not only celebrates the new film but also brings us back to the roots of the original film and toy line,” reads a statement from Jamie Stevens, executive vice president with Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “Hasbro has a proven track record of working with well-known IP to make a variety of high-quality toys and figures that appeal to people of all ages, and we are excited to leverage this expertise to bring new product experiences to Ghostbusters fans around the world.”

It remains to be seen what exactly comes out, but you can count on new 6-inch scale figures for sure. The strategy they have been using on Power Rangers with the Lightning Collection should be used as the barometer. Here’s hoping that we get figures from across the entire franchise, from Real Ghostbusters through the 2016 all-female reboot.

The next film, starring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Sigourney Weaver, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, and a host of others hits theaters on July 10, 2020.
