Deadline has announced that 20th Century Fox is ready to bring us Independence Day 2. The film is scheduled to start production in May 2015, and to hit theaters June 24, 2016. This will make it just shy of 20 year anniversary as the original film came out July 3rd, 1996.
Reportedly, Fox is STILL trying to cement a directing deal with first film director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, White House Down). Back in 2013, Emmerich had said in an interview there were plans brewing for a multi-part series, titling them ID Forever Part 1 and ID Forever Part II.
Will Smith has denied multiple times his return for the sequel, sadly. We’re still hopeful that Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will come back. Additional casting will be announced as soon as Emmerich’s deal is officially signed.
