Finally we’re getting some movement on news around Fox’s Independence Day 2. While Will Smith isn’t expected to return for the film, word has emerged that Survivor’s Remorse star Jessie Usher has been cast to play Smith’s character’s son in the sequel.

He’s the first announced casting for the project, so it wouldn’t be surprising for this to start to open the floodgates – which if that’s the case it means Fox is finally focused on getting the film done. If we don’t hear anything else in the next month, it likely means that while the casting is real, Fox is fishing to see if public interest is strong enough to warrant moving forward.
