This photo which was taken on December 30th, 2013 by the by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (currently in orbit above Mars) shows what true Trek fans would recognize instantly as the United Federation of Planets Command insignia on the surface of our red neighbor. The communicator-shapes are actually large sand dunes (furthering my theory that Mars is actually Arrakis) caused by the harsh wind storms that ravish the planet.
“For dune fields, the spacing of individual dunes is a function of sand supply, wind speed, and topography,” NASA explained on it’s website. Tech Times notes, depicts several of these formations/structures across the Martian surface, near Mawrth Vallis, one of the oldest valleys on Mars.
