You read that right, the title of this article is that A) Hollywood is making a Tetris film and B) it will in fact be a trilogy of films. Empire Online had a chance to talk with producer Larry Kasanoff and asked him about the upcoming film and here’s what he said:

That’s correct. And purely because the story we conceived is so big. This isn’t us splitting the last one of our eight movies in two to wring blood out of the stone. It’s just a big story.

Alright, fair enough that you’re not splitting one story into multiple films (looking at you The Hobbit) but at least The Hobbit HAD a story to split into a trilogy. The game is about a bunch of blocks that interlock — and that’s it. Apparently my apprehension isn’t an issue according to the filmmaker:

We’re not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie but it’s great that people think so. It sets the bar rather low!

Now that I’ve set the bar that low, what will the story be about? Other than it’ll be a science-fiction film Kasanoff is mum on the subject saying:

We want the story to be a surprise, but it’s a big science-fiction movie. I came up with the idea as I was thinking about Tetris and the theme of creating order out of chaos.

I guarantee you it’s not what you think. No-one has come remotely close to figuring out what we’re doing.

Honestly, this makes it sound like that fake Tetris: The Movie trailer that came out a few years back. Created to parody the adaptation of Battleship, which itself was a big science-fiction film that failed at the box-office, I can’t help but thing that this is something we’re in for in the near future.

This film tickles every skeptical bone in my body and I can’t think of any possible way this movie will be any good. Perhaps Kasanoff has come up with some ingenious idea but a quick survey of his filmography reveals Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and C.H.U.D. II – Bud the Chud I will call it unlikely.
