AC-Spidey2-Score85First thing I’d like to point out is I’m a huge Spider-man fan, so whenever a new Spidey movie comes out it’s a big event in my life. Right off the bat I’ll say this movie was great!  Though I can understand the complaints I’ve heard about the film.

One of the biggest complaints is Max Dillon/Electro. Most of his scenes can be cringe worthy. His character is a little too over the top and belongs in a cartoon. One scene where he’s having an imaginary conversation with spider-man had me wanting that scene to end as soon as possible, but it kept going.  During the Times Square fight Electro delivers a line so bad my reaction was slapping my leg. Once Electro is captured and experimented on, the scientist with him is even worse. The scientist sounds like that cliché cartoon nazi you would imagine an evil scientist to sound like. Fortunately I had no electro complaints in the final act, and the character did provide good action.

Electro wasn’t bad enough to ruin the movie considering this movie is two and a half hours long, and those bad moments with electro barely filled in any of that running time, plus there’s a lot more to this movie than Electro.

Which brings me to the films many different plots it had to balance. I personally had no problem following along, so I don’t understand the complaints. I think everything was fleshed out quite nicely for me, even though a bit unconventionally. The only jarring things are when you go from silly scenes like electro and the mad scientist straight to some realistic drama.

This is the first time I feel like I got what a Spider-Man movie is supposed to be. The Raimi trilogy was close, but not quite. The previous Amazing Spider-Man film was a good setup but too dark. This film really sets its own tone & finally doesn’t try to be something else. It really feels like it was ripped straight from the pages of its comics. Andrew Garfield already proved to me he IS Spider-man in the previous film, this time he just solidifies that fact. The colors in this film are vibrant and great to look at. The combination of drama, comedy, and action is that perfect balance that Spider-man is supposed to be. It’s too soon for me to say, but this might be my favorite Spider-man film for this reason, and a few more.

This film is packed with character cameos. One character seen is Felicia Hardy that fans know as the Black Cat. During every scene with her I couldn’t really listen to what she’s saying cause I’m too distracted trying to picture her as the Black Cat (I can kinda see it). The film nicely sets up the Sinister Six. I personally love how these new Spider-man films aren’t completely self-contained in a nice bow, but instead have unresolved things that set up a bigger picture, just like its comics do. That’s something critics complain about, but fuck ‘em, keep doing what you’re doing Sony.

One problem though is this film answers questions/mysteries the first film brought up, unfortunately they’re pretty anticlimactic answers. Which makes me wonder what the point even was for dragging it out through two films.

This film really tugged at my emotions. I was totally invested, and could really feel the rush of it all (watch that shit in the best Imax 3D screening you can find). The final act of the film is amazing, and that’s as much as I’ll say about that. I want this film in 3D Blu-ray now!

I give The Amazing Spider-Man 2 an 8.5 out of 10

(Score based on school grading in which 10-5 mean A-F, and 5-0 lets you know how badly it failed, just to rub it in)
