Before 13 Assassins , 300, and any epic battle movie that depicts a small group uprising for the few, there was Seven Samurai . I’m a huge fan of Japanese culture and film, old or new, from traditional to J-Gore. To me, old samurai movies are like westerns for most Americans. One actor that always stood out for me was Toshiro Mifune. Akira Kurosawa a film director is regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. He and Toshiro collaborated on 16 projects together. Akira said regarding Toshiro, ”I am proud of nothing I have done other than with him”.
Akira commenting on his acting once said:

“The ordinary Japanese actor might need 10 feet of film to get across an impression. Toshiro Mifune only needed three feet.”

Now finally nearly 17 years after his death, he is being recognized in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Toshiro’s star will be alongside the Hollywood notables such as Steve Carrell, Bradley Cooper and Quentin Tarantino. This recognition puts him in a select club of Japanese movie figures with the distinction, including actor Sessue Hayakawa and Godzilla.

I would recommend anyone to check out some of his films, and appreciate one of the greats in acting, especially those who are into the Japanese martial arts or just into film in general. Here are some of his memorable scenes.
