First James Avery and now Greg Martin has passed away– and we’ve lost an important legend in videogaming history. Don’t worry if you don’t know his name, neither did I, but he was instrumental in creating some of the most famous box cover art from the 80’s and 90’s.

When I first started drawing as a kid, I copied a lot of his art and I never realized it was the same person I was copying from until today.

So raise a glass as salute the man who brought you all of this awesome art from a time when you judged a videogame by it’s cover (and the little screengrabs on the back). This is the man that made you buy those games– the man who made you think that even if the game was terrible, the box cover was awesome.
