day7tonight’s midnight movie during the 25daysofchristmasmovies is a true classic, the 1986 movie adaptation of The Nutcracker. designed by famed children’s story author and artist Maurice Sendak, yes the guy who wrote where the wild things are. This fairytale through ballet tells the story of young Clara Stahlbaum and her Christmas gift, a nutcracker. On ChristmasEve, Clara’s godfather, Herr Drosselmeier gives her the present, but her brother breaks it out of jealousy. The nutcracker is repaired, and late that night, when Clara sneaks downstairs to look at it, she has a vivid dream in which an army of mice led by the Mouse King threatens her and the nutcracker turns into a prince to save her. There are many versions of the nutcracker. However, this is the very best, IMO. with a storyline that goes beyond the usual interpretation and amazing dancing performances, I’ve enjoyed watching this version every year since it came out on VHS. it is currently available steaming on netflix
