I’m still processing what I want to say about Agent Carter, Marvel’s new series revolving around the adventures of our eponymous heroine after Captain America put himself on ice – so for now, have a quick bulleted list of things I loved.
-Hayley Atwell, first off and obviously. Getting a single Marvel one-shot of her own was a gift, but an entire show? Marvel, you’re the gift that keeps on giving. And unlike our beloved Agent Coulson’s path along a similar trajectory, Peggy’s series is much more immediately engaging than Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D initially was.
-Just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek weaponized femininity to kick us off, while making it clear that’s not at all the only thing the character is about. (“Oh, don’t mind me – I’m just making the tea. You know, like women are supposed to do, invisibly. Not gathering all the intel I need before you even notice I’m in the room.”)
-Getting to see more of Peggy’s brutally direct and matter-of-fact fighting style – she just gets it done, in the least amount of punches and with whatever blunt object is within reach.
-Her first name is Agent.
-In addition to the return of the perfection that is Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, we are also treated to James Frain’s ears, James Urbaniak’s rare and wonderful face, and the endlessly charming and impossible to overestimate Enver Gjokaj (Dollhouse) back as a regular on our televisions! Hooray!
-The appearance of Dr. Vanko, Senior.
-That’s what you get for ordering a liter of cola, Farva.
-And lastly, I am just so intrigued and excited to see what is really going on with our new friend Jarvis. Really, sir. Nobody can be that proper of a gentleman all the time.
Agent Carter airs Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC for 7 more weeks.
