Artist short profile:
– Name: Matt Emery.
– Location: Melbourne.
– Artistic style: Humour of a dubious nature.
– Website/s: www.guzumo.com
– Bragging rights(Featured work/collaborations): I got arrested and hauled away in cuffs in 2008, Victorian Police taking my comic “Let’s Kill White People” in for evidence and accusing me of something almost as bad as murder. Luckily it was a case of mistaken identity. Black House Comics published a 120 page collection, THE GUZUMO SHOW, in 2011. Pikita Press published an 80 page collection, PAY THROUGH THE SOUL this year. In March 2013 I’ll be releasing two comics:
TEAM TEAM: Ch*nk Eyed Rice Slinger and TEAM TEAM: F*ggot Quest.

Artist continued profile. Let’s get a tiny bit personal:
– What are your goals as an artist?: Make myself laugh. Make other people laugh. Make fun of people I don’t like. Make fun of my friends. Score a TV show and get out of the god awful ghetto of ‘comics’. Just kidding, I’ve got ink in my veins…
.
– Favourite artist/why?: KARL WILLIS has been an influence since my teens. He is the perfect combination of bleak humour and beautiful cartooning. Anal Atrocities, Connie Radar, Jessica of the School yard and Princess Seppuku, ALL BRILLIANT. Go buy his comics from the Comic Book Factory.  – http://www.comicbookfactory.net/
.
– What do you think of Comics being made into movies?: I don’t really care. Movies adapted from comics are rarely as fun or rich an experience as reading the original comics. I did however love the recent Dredd film. As a fan of the character since I was about six I thought they nailed it. American Splendour was pretty damn good to.
.
– Has reading a Comic ever changed your life? Which one/why? (If yes): 2000AD and the Eagle of the eighties, I didn’t realise it at the time but most of the stories in these were being written by the same writers and they were angry punk fuelled adult comics from Thatcher era Britain that taught young me a lot about the adult world.
.
– If someone created a Comic about your life what would they title it?: Under-achieving Smart Ass – The Life of M.Emery.
.
– Where there any defining moments in your life that have influenced your artistic style?: Somewhere along the way I really got into the ethos of DIY/Punk which inspired me to get into art and music despite being fairly inept at both. Like a lot of things though, if you stick at it for long enough you can develop something. I guess realising anyone can draw if they want to was a key thing. You just have to want to.
.
– If you could have any power from a Comic character, what would it be/why?: The power to not have to sleep.

.
– Favourite Comic artist of all time/why?: I can’t pick just one. Here’s some; John Wagner, Steve Ditko, Trace Hodgson, Stan Sakai, John Porcellino, Karl Wills, Ken Reid, Brian Chippendale, Osamu Tezuka, Simon Hanselman, Burton Silver, Pat Mills, Bill Peet, Carl Barks, Los Bros Hernandez, Massimo Belardinelli, Jesse Moynihan, Peter O’Donnell, Jordi Bernet, Kevin O’Neill, Ron Turner, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Joe Matt, Sammy Harkham, and Simon Bond. All folk who created distinctively original work that made an impression on me, most before I was fifteen years old.

.
.
– What do you prefer to snack on when creating a masterpiece?:
Coffee, chocolate, biscuits, chocolate biscuits. I’m really into binge eating.
– Where do you ‘draw’ your daily inspiration from?: My stupid day job as postman. I spend the bulk of my time at work thinking about comics. I’m a pretty lousy postman but it gives me a lot of time to think.
.
– If you had a snail that could grant wishes, what would you name it?:
Cock-Master Deluxe.
– Which movie would you like to watch again and again?: Happiness.
– What’s your most prized possession?: My health? Is that a proper answer? I’m probably too old now to put much value in my material things. That pile of original comic art isn’t gonna help me in the face of a Tsunami or Cancer. Geez, I’m terrible at answering these things. I’m sure everything I own will be in a landfill somewhere within the next hundred years. It’s just stuff.
.
Likes: History.
.
– Dislikes: Sleeping.
– Favourite joke: The Aristocrats.
– Any thank you’s/shoutouts?: Yeah, my folks got me into comics, My Mum grew up on Carl Barks duck stories, Richie Rich and Casper and my Dad read 2000AD, Warren Horror mags and Aussie reprints of American horror comics which they foisted in my adolescent hands giving a lifelong interest/obsession in the medium. Thanks Mum and Dad!
