Artist continued profile. Let’s get a tiny bit personal:
.
scott (2)– What are your goals as an artist?: I have three main goals as an artist. 1) To always be in a state of learning. There’s always areas to improve whether its skill and technique or improvements in the digital tools we use. 2) Create artwork that reflects my Faith in Jesus, which I do through my company Studio Three16. 3) Share my artistic knowledge with other artists to help them improve, just as other artists have helped me.
.
– Favourite artist/why?: There are so many to choose from. But to quickly give a brief list, I would say some of them are: Dave Dorman, Chris Trevas, Greg Horn, Chris Scalf, and Christian Waggoner. As to why? Well each has different reasons, but the common thread between them all is that their artwork inspires me. It speaks to me. They scott (17)all have differing techniques, and I enjoy trying to breakdown those techniques and see which elements work for my style and which don’t. The real blessing in my life has been that I’ve been able to meet all of these artists through the many comic cons I am at, and I have even been able to become friends with some of them too.
.
– What do you think of Comics being made into movies?: I am all for it. Assuming they do a good job on them. Marvel has been hitting some major home runs lately which has made people forget about how many REALLY BAD superhero movies have been made over the years. But what I like about super hero movies is that they give us a strong contrast between good and evil. That good is right and evil is wrong. It’s an important message scott (16)for kids (and adults) to hear. Too often now, movies want good/evil to be a “gray area” instead of strong contrasts.
.
– Has reading a Comic ever changed your life? Which one/why?: I don’t think “a” comic has changed my life. But I definitely think the large volumes of comics I read over the years had a strong defining characteristic about them. It helped to shape my view of doing the right thing, helping others, and standing up to people or situations that are wrong. Not to mention, comics were a huge inspiration for me to want to draw. I used to try and duplicate the drawing styles of the various artists. Also, I used to ALWAYS have my copy of “How to Draw the Marvel Way” opened next to me as I tried to figure out how to draw characters.
.
– Where there any defining moments in your life that have influenced your artistic style?: hmmm. I would say my general world view is there’s enough darkness in this world. So I tend to stay away from getting too dark in my art. There’s enough of that in the world. So I like to focus more on the heroic actions instead of the evil one’s. With that said, I am always fascinated by the works of artists who can really explore the dark and twisted side of art and love their work. I just find it is really hard for me to allow myself in that place when I create.
.
scott (15)– If someone created a Comic about your life what would they title it?: “The Misguided Adventures of a Comic Con Jesus Freak”.
.
– If you could have any power from a Comic character, what would it be/why?: I’d be like Wolverine. His body heals everything so he is as close to eternal health as you can get.
.
– Favourite Comic artist of all time/why?: I’m going to have to go with Todd McFarlane on this one. I was in the midst of my comic collecting days when he came onto the scene. His artwork blew my mind and the way he did his lines just sparked my imagination. I remember studying the comics he did and was amazed scott (14)at how many lines and amount of detail he would squeeze into each panel. If he did the cover, or the whole book, I had to buy it.
.
– What do you prefer to snack on when creating a masterpiece?: Black coffee with a chocolate protein bar on the side.
.
– Where do you ‘draw’ your daily inspiration from?: Two sources. The first is from the Bible. And the second usually ties back to Star Wars.
.
– Have you ever accidentally injured anyone?: LOL. What? I guess for the record I will say that they were at least all made to look like accidents.
.
– If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be/why?: I’m always talking to people and finding ways to collaborate with others. I love doing it because I find I always learn something new when joining forces with others, and hopefully I was also able to teach something new to them too. My most recent collaboration was on my book, “Beloved Witness: Inspired Visions” where I pulled together 22 amazing Christian artists from the world of pop art and comic cons. People like Sergio Cariello (Action Bible), Mike S. Miller (Game of Thrones & Injustice: Gods Among Us), Scott McDaniel (DC Comics), Chris Yambar (The Simpsons) and so many more. It was awesome to work with these guys and not learn more about them as artists, but also to get to know their hearts and know them as individuals.
scott (1).
– If evil-doers invaded your country would you rush to the battle lines to defend the motherland or hide in a box?: Hopefully I’ll never have to find out. It’s easy to say I would rush to defend, but unless you’ve been in war, you have no idea how you will react.
.
– If you were a wrestler what would your stage name be?: Whatever name Vince McMahon told me to have.
.
– Likes: Running, reading, drawing, and long walks on the beach. Just kidding. I don’t care for beaches. Too much sand.
.
– Dislikes: Beaches and sand. LOL.
scott (3).
– Favourite joke: Anything Mitch Hedberg.
.
– Any thank you’s/shoutouts?: Thanks to Aggressive Comics for talking with me!
