Inventor Greg Henderson, CEO of Silicon Valley think tank Arx Pax has created a hoverboard prototype. He’s hoping to raise a whopping $250,000 via a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of the device every Back to the Future fan has wanted ever since gazing eyes on it in BttF2.

It’s called the Hendo and was originally developed as a new way of protecting homes and buildings from earthquakes and floods by using electromagnetism instead of liquid or gas as a buffer medium. The upshot is that you can use the same technology to build a hoverboard.

There are 2 catches, however.

  1. It’s going to cost you $10,000 to be one of the first 10 people to own it.
  2. It only works on metal surfaces.

That second point is a bit of a bummer but Henderson is working on that too:

While our hoverboard is primarily intended to be self-propelled, the actions which stabilize it can also be used to drive it forward by altering the projected force on the surface below.

Currently, this surface needs to be a non-ferromagnetic conductor. Right now we use commonly available metals in a simple sheets, but we are working on new compounds and new configurations to maximize our technology and minimize costs.

The devices are to be handed out on October 21, 2015 (the date Marty and Doc Brown arrive in the future). Arc Pax is hoping Michael J. Fox will be there as they would like to auction off the first board and donate the proceeds to his Parkinson’s Research Foundation. Check out the working prototype below:
