Not a total surprise after the love the character got in Daredevil, but now it’s official: there will be a Punisher TV show on Netflix. Jon Bernthal will return as Frank Castle, with Entertainment Weekly describing his character as one “who brings his own lethal form of justice to Hell’s Kitchen.” Fingers crossed that Punisher goes to other parts of New York in his own series, as that particular section of Manhattan is getting a bit crowded.
Marvel’s The Punisher marks the sixth series ordered (so far) as part of the collaboration between Netflix and Marvel Television, including the upcoming Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the ensemble miniseries The Defenders – along with Jessica Jones and the aforementioned Daredevil. (And in case you’re wondering, as we are, whether Bernthal’s character will also be added to The Defenders lineup, that’s not yet clear – though it seems likely he’ll at least pop in for an appearance.)
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil,” Jeph Loeb, executive producer and head of Marvel Television, said in a statement. “Now combined with showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring Marvel’s The Punisher to Netflix.”
The Punisher series joins Netflix’s growing slate of Marvel shows. Luke Cage is due out this fall, with a second season of Jessica Jones already ordered and Iron Fist in the works. All heroes—including Daredevil—will come together in The Defenders miniseries.
