The original Resident Evil is getting a shiny new overhaul….again. Resident Evil 1 is soon to be remastered for release on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Capcom has announced. It’s going to be a digital-only launch in early 2015, the new port is based on PREVIOUS overhaul of the GameCube “RE-make”. This new version will include 1080p visuals (720p for last-gen consoles) and 5.1 surround support.

There’s no word yet on a general price, but it will cost 3990 yen (about £23) in Japan, where the last-gen console version will arrive before Christmas. You’ll be able to choose between playing the game in its classic 4:3 ratio or in 16:9 widescreen, and have a choice of control styles. If you decide to play in widescreen there’s even going to be a new scrolling camera, which appears to be a compromise between a more dynamic camera option and the original’s fixed angles.

The classic Resident Evil control scheme remains (if you really consider yourself a purist) but there’s also a more modern style for moving characters as we’ve become accustomed to.

Resident Evil first released in 1996 for the original PlayStation, but was then re-made from the ground up for GameCube in 2002, a version of which was later ported to Wii. Ironically, there’s no Wii U version of the port planned, despite the remake originally being a Nintendo exclusive.

But…where’s RE7? Well apparently Resident Evil 7 is indeed indevelopment, according to a former employee of motion capture studio House of Moves. On her LinkedIn profile (According to Gamespot and NeoGAF), an ex-costume designer at the company claims she did work as “costume designer for the video game Resident Evil 7.” House of Moves is a Los Angeles, California motion capture studio that has done work for Halo: Reach, God of War III, and Call of Duty: Black Ops, among numerous other games.

“As Capcom has made no official announcement regarding Resident Evil 7 we have no comment to make regarding this,” a Capcom representative told Videogamer.

Former Capcom marketing boss Michael Pattison told MCV that the next entry in the Resident Evil series is likely to return to the franchise’s roots. Maybe revisiting what made Resident Evil 1 so good is just a stepping stone to bringing some of that back to life in the next installment in the franchise.

We can only hope….
