Veronica-MarsA long time ago…
Really, what other way is there to start a review for this movie? Being an old fan of the show, who never got closure from the downer that was the final season before they got canceled, I had to at least chip in to the Kickstarter that funded getting this movie made. The success of this project is more important than just this show, for it could be an eye opener to all other cancelled shows that left fans wanting more. (Cough Firefly)
But with that said this is why I was a bit disappointed to see the small turnout in my theater for the film (which to my knowledge is only playing at some AMC theaters, so it’s not like the fans are spread out in different theaters in my area). To my surprise, when the movie begins I’m not greeted by its opening theme song. They instead briefly recap the show (which I’m glad they did, I have the memory of a goldfish), and go straight into the movie. The film pretty much is an extended Veronica Mars episode that crams an entire season into itself, yet doesn’t feel rushed at all. The film takes it’s time telling the story. I feel the film kept a very mellow tone throughout, even during the “action” near the end.

The only problem I have with this film is that it does feel more like a TV show than a movie, but you can’t really complain considering its small budget funded by its fans. Also there was one conflict introduced that I didn’t feel was properly resolved. Don’t wanna ruin it but even though it wasn’t the main conflict, I found it a little more interesting than the one the story centered on. The film is fan service, filled with plenty of old characters, nods to show moments, and even dismisses the could’ve been pilot where Veronica joins the FBI. All this while still told in a way that could appeal to your average moviegoer. Veronica Mars delivers the closure the fans have yearned for. I can only hope this film inspires other studios to follow in its footsteps.

This Marshmallow gives Veronica Mars a 7.5 out of 10

(Score based on school grading in which 10-5 mean A-F, and 5-0 lets you know how badly it failed, just to rub it in)
