Did you ever read Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant as a child?  I did, and I read it to my little brother when he was growing up.  I was a little leery when the project was announced by Disney, but with Steven Spielberg at the helm, it might turn out alright in the end.  Break out the Frobscottle and be prepared to wizbang with the best of them.

The BFG (big, friendly giant) is a lovely story about a little girl named Sophie, in this case played by newcomer Ruby Barnhill, who meets and is kidnapped by the BFG and taken to giant country.  The giant is played by Mark Rylance.

He’s 24 feet tall and endearingly dimwitted. He keeps to himself for the most part, unlike Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement), who are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans. Sophie initially is frightened of the BFG but comes to realize he is actually quite gentle and charming. Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for each other quickly grows.

But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country attracts the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. The pair soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but first they must convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.

The movie is expected to hit theaters on July 1st, 2016.
